You clicked buy with your old address saved, or you realise you will be away when the parcel lands. Once a label is printed, the address is not fixed in stone - but your options narrow sharply the further the parcel travels. Speed matters more than anything else here. ## First: work out where the parcel is Open tracking and identify the last scan. Three broad states determine what is possible: 1. **Label created, not yet collected.** Easiest case. Contact the sender and ask them to void the label and reprint. No carrier involvement, no fee. 2. **In the network, not yet at the final delivery depot.** Redirection is usually possible, sometimes free, sometimes for a charge. 3. **Out for delivery.** Almost nothing can be changed. Your realistic options are to let it be delivered and collect it later, or ask for it to be held at the depot after the failed attempt. ## The standard tools by carrier type **Postal operators.** Most national posts offer a paid package intercept or redelivery service that can redirect to a different address or hold the item at a post office. The request must usually be made before the item reaches the destination delivery unit, and there is a fee. Some offer a separate long-term mail redirection product for house moves, which is a different service and covers ongoing mail rather than one parcel. **Express and parcel carriers.** Nearly all major couriers run a delivery-management portal or app where the recipient can, before the delivery attempt, change the delivery day, redirect to a neighbour, redirect to a pickup point or locker, or authorise a safe place. Redirecting to a completely different street address is more restricted - some allow it only within the same delivery area, and many require the sender to authorise it because the shipping contract is theirs. **Marketplace and retailer deliveries.** If the retailer controls the carrier account, the retailer can change the address far more easily than you can. Always try their customer service first for marketplace orders. ## The fastest route, step by step 1. **Register with the carrier's delivery preferences service** using the tracking number. Many carriers require you to verify you are the recipient at that address, which is why doing this the moment you get a tracking number is smarter than waiting. 2. **Choose the least disruptive option that solves your problem.** In order of likelihood of success: change the delivery date, redirect to a locker or pickup point, redirect to a neighbour, redirect to a different address. 3. **If the portal will not allow it, contact the sender.** They hold the contract and can issue an instruction the carrier will accept. 4. **If the parcel is already out for delivery,** let the attempt happen. After a failed attempt, holding at depot or rescheduling becomes available again. 5. **Refuse the parcel as a last resort.** A refused parcel returns to sender and you can reorder. Slow and clumsy, but it beats a delivery to an address you no longer control. ## What it costs Expect three tiers: - **Free:** date changes, safe-place instructions, neighbour delivery, redirect to a pickup point within the same area - offered by most parcel carriers as a customer-retention feature. - **Small fee:** redirect to a different address in the same region, or hold at a post office. - **Higher fee:** formal package intercept while an item is in the postal stream, and any change on express international services, which may also trigger a customs re-declaration. ## Special cases - **International parcels.** Once an item has cleared or entered customs, address changes are typically impossible. The declaration is tied to the consignee. Plan to redirect domestically after arrival, if at all. - **Age-restricted or signature-required items.** These cannot be diverted to lockers and often cannot be left with a neighbour. - **Perishables.** Redirection adds time. For food and pharmacy deliveries, cancelling and reordering is nearly always better than rerouting. - **You have moved house.** Do not rely on per-parcel redirection. Set up an official mail redirection with your postal operator and update the address on every retailer account. Redirection buys you time; it is not a permanent fix. ## Preventing the problem - Delete old addresses from retailer accounts rather than leaving them saved. - Set your default shipping address to a locker or work address if home delivery rarely works for you. - Check the address on the confirmation email within the first hour - that is the window in which most sellers can still edit an order. - Use a carrier delivery-preferences account so future parcels arrive with your standing instructions already applied. ## Bottom line Address changes are a race against the parcel. Act while the item is still between facilities, use the carrier's own preferences portal first, and go through the sender when the portal refuses. Once the item is on a van, stop trying to redirect it and start planning the collection instead.
