Instacart vs DoorDash Grocery: 2026 In-Depth Comparison
By Priya Patel — 2026-07-11 · 9 min read
Which is cheaper — Instacart or DoorDash grocery? We compare delivery fees, store selection, subscription plans, and shopper quality in this hands-on 2026 review.
Once Instacart's only real competitor was Amazon Fresh. In 2026, DoorDash has grown into a full-featured grocery-delivery service with hundreds of chain-store partnerships and its own private-label products through Wolt Market. Both apps let you order groceries in an hour or less; both charge markups, fees, and tips that can double the shelf price. Which wins in 2026 depends on where you live, what you buy, and whether you're willing to subscribe.
Here's what we found after four weeks of A/B testing identical grocery lists across both apps in six US markets.
## Coverage: Instacart still wider, DoorDash catching up
Instacart partners with roughly 1,500 retailers across 14,000+ store banners in North America — Costco, Kroger, Publix, ALDI, Sprouts, CVS, Sam's Club, Best Buy, and countless regional chains. In 2026 there is almost no US zip code where Instacart cannot deliver from *some* nearby store.
DoorDash's grocery footprint expanded aggressively in 2024–2025 and now includes Albertsons, Safeway, Weis Markets, Sprouts, ALDI, Meijer, Wegmans, Giant Eagle, and Loblaws in Canada. In our six test markets, DoorDash covered 60–90% of the stores Instacart offered.
**Winner:** Instacart, especially for warehouse clubs and pharmacies.
## Price on the same basket
For an identical 32-item family basket at the same store (a Kroger banner in Cincinnati), our totals were:
- **Store shelf total:** $124.60
- **Instacart in-app total:** $146.20 (17% markup)
- **DoorDash in-app total:** $151.90 (22% markup)
- **Delivery fees before tip (Instacart):** $3.99 (with Instacart+); $7.99 without
- **Delivery fees before tip (DoorDash):** $0 (with DashPass); $5.99 without
- **Service fee (both):** ~5% of subtotal
- **Recommended tip:** ~15% of subtotal
Instacart's shelf markup was consistently lower than DoorDash's across brand-name items but the two evened out on private-label goods. DoorDash's DashPass "free delivery over $25" is a real headline saver if you order weekly; Instacart+ is similar at $9.99/month.
**Winner:** Instacart on the shelf; DoorDash on subscription-included fees.
## Speed
Both platforms now offer priority delivery (30–45 min) and standard (1–3 hours). In our tests:
- **Median Instacart delivery:** 68 minutes
- **Median DoorDash grocery delivery:** 62 minutes
Effectively a tie. On less-populated routes DoorDash occasionally sat un-batched for 20+ minutes; Instacart occasionally sent extra-slow shoppers on massive Costco runs. Both apps allow scheduling in advance, which is more reliable than "as soon as possible" during peak hours.
## Shopper quality and substitutions
Both platforms let the shopper communicate mid-shop, propose substitutions, and photograph produce for approval. Quality of substitutions was:
- **Instacart:** shoppers accepted "no substitutes" commands more reliably; better use of chat for produce quality. About 12% of items required a decision.
- **DoorDash:** more aggressive default substitutions; occasionally swapped brands without asking. About 9% of items required a decision, but the "surprise swap" rate was higher.
**Winner:** Instacart on substitution transparency; DoorDash on speed.
## Subscriptions
- **Instacart+ ($9.99/month or $99/year):** Free delivery on $35+ orders, reduced service fees, credit-back on annual plan.
- **DashPass ($9.99/month or $96/year):** Free delivery on $25+ grocery orders and $12+ restaurant orders, reduced service fees.
If you use DoorDash for restaurant delivery *and* grocery, DashPass pays for itself much faster than Instacart+. If you're only ordering groceries and use warehouse-club stores, Instacart+ wins.
## App experience
Both apps do search-and-replace, list saving, recurring orders, and receipt storage. Notable differences:
- **Instacart** has better recipe integration ("shop this recipe" fills the cart automatically) and Costco-specific features (member card sync, bulk-pricing display).
- **DoorDash** has a cleaner unified home screen that shows groceries, restaurants, retail, and convenience side by side.
- **DoorDash** offers *DoubleDash* — add items from a second nearby store to the same delivery for a small extra fee. This is the most differentiated feature on either app.
## Customer service when things go wrong
Missing items, damaged produce, and outright non-delivery all happen. In our tests:
- **Instacart** refunds within the app in under a minute for missing items; occasionally requires a chat interaction for whole-order issues.
- **DoorDash** offers instant credit for missing items and refunds to card on request; whole-order failures are handled well but require an in-app chat.
**Winner:** Tie. Both are among the best consumer-facing return experiences in delivery.
## Which should you choose?
- **Warehouse-club shopper (Costco, Sam's, BJ's):** Instacart.
- **Whole-basket weekly shop with DashPass already:** DoorDash.
- **Live in a smaller US metro:** whichever has your store.
- **Grocery + restaurant + convenience in one app:** DoorDash.
- **Best value if you cook from Instacart-integrated recipes:** Instacart.
Neither is meaningfully cheaper than the other after fees and tips — expect to pay 20–35% above shelf price on any grocery delivery in 2026, no matter which app you use. Pick based on store coverage first, subscription overlap second.
