If you work away from home, live in a shared building, or have simply had one parcel too many go missing, the doorstep is no longer the obvious default. Four delivery destinations now compete for your orders, and each has a distinct profile. ## The four options **Home delivery.** The parcel comes to your door. Free with most orders, no extra journey, but requires someone present or a genuinely safe place to leave it. **Parcel locker.** An automated bank of compartments in a car park, station or supermarket. You get a code or QR, collect any time within a holding window, usually 24/7. **Pickup point (shop counter).** A convenience store, pharmacy or dedicated depot counter holds your parcel. Staffed hours only, but a person can help with problems. **PO Box or mailbox service.** A rented postal address at a post office or private mailbox provider. Lockers and pickup points effectively eliminate it, because the parcel is never unattended in public. That is their single strongest argument. Home delivery is not automatically unsafe, though. Deliveries that require a signature, deliveries to a building with a concierge, and deliveries scheduled into a window when you are home carry very little risk. The problem is specifically the unattended drop. ## Cost Lockers and pickup points are almost always free at checkout, and some retailers discount them because consolidated drops are cheaper for the carrier than individual doorsteps. PO Boxes cost money - an annual rental that varies substantially by location and box size. That cost only makes sense if you also want a stable postal address, privacy from disclosing your home address, or reliable mail handling while travelling. ## Practical limits people discover late - **Compartment size.** Lockers refuse oversized parcels. If your order is bulky, the carrier will divert it, usually to a nearby counter, and you will lose a day. - **Holding windows.** Lockers typically hold items for a few days before returning them to sender. Pickup points hold slightly longer. Miss the window and you are into a refund cycle. - **Carrier lock-in.** A locker network usually only accepts parcels from its own carrier or partners. You cannot send a random courier to a competitor's locker. - **Identity checks.** Age-restricted goods and high-value items often cannot go to a locker at all. - **PO Box acceptance.** Many couriers will not deliver to a PO Box because they cannot obtain a signature there. Check before using one as your default shipping address. ## Which to choose - **You are home most days:** stick with home delivery, and add a safe-place instruction the carrier can actually follow. - **You work out and live in a flat:** locker or pickup point as your default. Choose one on a route you already travel, not the nearest one on the map. - **You order high-value goods:** signature-required home delivery, or a staffed pickup point where an employee signs and holds it. - **You travel often or want your home address private:** a PO Box or private mailbox with parcel acceptance is worth the rental. - **You order bulky items:** home delivery is the only realistic option. ## Making home delivery work better If you keep the doorstep, these changes remove most of the risk: - Set a permanent safe-place instruction in each carrier's app, with a photo if supported. - Use delivery windows and reschedule proactively rather than hoping. - Ask for signature on anything you would be upset to lose. - Add a lockable parcel box if you own the property. It converts every unattended drop into a secure one. - Register for carrier notifications so you know the parcel arrived within minutes, not hours. ## What to do if a parcel goes missing The claim path differs by destination. For home deliveries marked as delivered, request the geotagged proof-of-delivery photo, check with neighbours, then raise a non-receipt claim with the retailer. For lockers and pickup points, the audit trail is far stronger - collection codes and camera coverage mean disputes resolve faster and more often in the customer's favour. That evidentiary difference is an underrated reason to use them for anything valuable. ## Bottom line Lockers and pickup points win on security and cost and lose on convenience. Home delivery wins on convenience and loses on risk. PO Boxes are a privacy and stability product rather than a parcel product. Most people are best served by a split strategy: doorstep for bulky and routine orders, locker or counter for anything they would hate to lose.
